If your copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl seemed broken out of the box, you’re not alone. Luckily, it’s not your game, it’s your Wii – and it’s likely nothing that can’t be fixed.
Since Brawl is a dual-layer game, utilizing an extra data layer, there are some Wii consoles with dirty laser lenses that will have trouble reading the game disc. If this is the case with you, Nintendo has set up an online repair form; if you fill it out, they’ll send you a repair label, allowing you to send in your console for (hopefully quick) repair. You won’t lose any of your Virtual Console games or save data, and if you do lose VC games, you’ll be able to re-download them at no cost. The time of repair will vary depending on your location in the United States.
I sure hope this doesn’t happen to me, and it’s kind of a bummer that the dual-layer discs seem kind of fragile in that regard, I suppose. On the other hand, it was fun watching pirates try to rip this game with little success.
