Nintendo Announces Hotel Dusk 2, Zangeki no REGINLEIV for Japan

Today Nintendo announced that they will be publishing two more games for early 2010, in Japan at least. One is an entirely new Wii game, while the other is the sequel to a popular DS game.

Boxart for Zangeki no REGINLEIV

Also known as Dynamic Slash, Zangeki no REGINLEIV is an action game developed by Sandlot. Sandlot is most well known for their Earth Defense Force series. This game is interesting because it is the first "M" rated game that Nintendo has published in Japan.

While not much is currently known about the game, the title roughly translates to "REGINLEIV the Headslasher", giving the impression that it will probably earn its M rating quite handily. Another key bit of information that Nintendo has released is that the game will feature 4 player online co-op, a feature which is rarely seen in a typical Wii game. Also, the game will employ multiple control methods, with both Classic Controller and Wii MotionPlus support confirmed.

Though it was shown as part of a sizzle reel in an October, 2008 press conference, this is the first time it has been officially acknowledged as a Nintendo-published title. With the current release date slated as February 11, 2010 in Japan, we should be getting more information, hopefully including some gameplay videos, soon.

Boxart for Last Window, a Hotel Dusk sequel.

Additionally, Nintendo also announced their intention to publish Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku in Japan. While that name might not mean much to you now, allow me to inform you that it is the sequel to Hotel Dusk, a hard boiled detective adventure game for the Nintendo DS. The game will take place in 1980’s Los Angeles, implying that it will take place at some point after the events of the first game, set in 1979.

While gameplay details are slim, all signs point to this game playing similarly to the first; in which the player would hold the DS like a book while exploring and solving puzzles using all of the DS’s unique features. The Japanese release date is currently set for January 14, 2010.

While the North American fate of both games is unknown, I would not be surprised to see Last Window come over with the name Hotel Dusk 2. It’s difficult to say, in the case of Dynamic Slash, though, given the success of previous M rated games in the North American market. In the end localization costs will doubtlessly be the determining factor on whether we’ll be getting these games or not.
