DSiWare Metal Torrent & X-Scape Impressions
The one DSiWare title I wanted to get my hands on to mess around with was the one I missed. However the two games I did see were amusing enough in their own little ways.

Metroid: Other M Intro Leaked
Metroid- Other M – Leaked Opening Cinematics
The opening for Other M has been leaked. The video quality here is not that good, but who cares!? Seeing the final fight of Super Metroid in 3D is absolutely amazing. Nintendo and Team Ninja have said that Other M will focus more on plot than previous Metroids have, and just by the little we see in this opening cinematic gives that feeling. I’m not quite sold on the voice acting yet, but I am glad that Jennifer Hale is still in the game, who “voiced” Samus in the Prime games and is also known as Naomi Hunter from the Metal Gear Solid series. Metroid: Other M is set to be released on June 27th, so fans don’t have too much longer to wait.
I think I just had a nerdgasm while watching this. I, for one, will be picking this up as soon as it comes out.

Wii Helps Those Recovering In Hospitals
A recent study shows that people recovering from strokes may be able to improve their motor-skills by playing Wii. The study was presented to the American Stroke Association yesterday. The study included a group of 20 stroke survivors who were split up to play 2 Wii games–Cooking Mama, and Wii Sports (Specifically Tennis). After playing 8 hour sessions over a period of two weeks, none of the patients had experienced any harmful side effects (except one person had nausea during the playtime). The main focus of the study was to get patients to move their arms that were previously affected by the stroke, and it worked. The researchers said that the group that used the Wii showed “significant motor improvement in speed and extent of recovery.”
Gustavo Saposnik (the leader of the study) said that “This is the first randomised clinical study showing that virtual reality using Wii gaming technology is feasible and safe and is potentially effective in enhancing motor function following a stroke.”
This article makes you really think about how the Wii is being used not just for gaming, but even in hospitals. Some nice food for thought.

Nintendo DSi XL Brief Thoughts
Although the Nintendo DSi XL has been out in Japan under the moniker Nintendo DSi LL, it has yet to hit US shores. At the event, many of the stations used the DSi XL as opposed to the DS Lite. This being my first encounter with the up-scaled handheld, I had a mixture of thoughts, most of them positive. As a note, due to the nature of the event, I wasn’t able to listen to the audio the device put out.

For one, it’s bigger, though that’s obvious, it’s noticeably bigger. Not just ‘grandma has a quaint milk mustache and you try to tell her about it,’ but, ‘a cow has landed on her and you’re struggling to pull her out from under it’ much of a difference. My hands felt immediately at home with an easier time to grip the system. When I first heard about it, I thought that my small hands wouldn’t fit the system and I’d have troubles with hand cramps more so than I already do. You can imagine the surprise on my face when I held the system and started gaming on it just as I were to ride a bike.

The screens are larger and just as vibrant as the DS Lite. When playing games I didn’t notice any weird scaling issues. It had me hypnotized to the point of not paying too much attention to the stylus which I vaguely remember felt great and didn’t have any complaints about. The touchscreens were just as responsive as any of the other pieces of hardware in the DS line are.
Now to the downside of the system, it’s huge. It’s not something you can throw into your purse and still have room for anything else. Then again, that’s also one of the strengths of the system. For a road warrior, it’s probably not a great solution if you’re looking for portable gaming, however if you play at home quite a bit, this might be worth it for the investment of $190.

Batman Game Announced For Wii And DS
The latest Batman animated series, The Brave And The Bold is getting it’s own game for the Nintendo Wii and DS. Batman: The Brave And The Bold will fully immerse players into the successful TV series world allowing players to play as Batman alone. On the other hand, if they choose to they can play cooperatively with a friend or family member as other characters like Robin, Green Lantern, Blue Beetle and some cameos from other heroes like Aquaman for puzzle solving aspects.
For owners of both the Wii and DS versions, they’ll be able to connect the games together to unlock Bat-Mite. When this happens you’ll take control of Bat-Mite using the Nintendo DS to either cause trouble or help the Heroes in the Wii version of the game.
No release date has been given other than that it’ll release sometime in the fall of this year.

Megaman 10 New Features Revealed
In the past week, Capcom has released more info about their upcoming game, Megaman 10. The WiiWare version of the game will be the first one to be released (giving the Wii a small window of exclusivity) on March 1st. Capcom revealed 8 new weapons, a new game mode, and more!
Capcom said a little about each new feature, to keep players eager.
“Commando Bomb
After launching the Commando Bomb, press up or down on the + Control Pad to make it turn at a 90 degree angle. The blast spreads horizontally (or vertically) and follows the contours of the landscape. This can be used to break through certain walls to get hidden items!
Wheel Cutter
Press the Attack Button once to attach the Wheel Cutter to your arm, and press the Attack Button again to launch it (it follows the contours of the landscape). You can launch it 3 times and it’s effective to attack enemies at a distance. You can attach the Wheel Cutter to your arm and dart at enemies!
Triple Blade
You can fire tri-directional blades and attack multiple enemies at one time. There are two patterns: surface-to-air on the ground, and air-to-surface in mid-jump.
Thunder Wool
You can launch a thunder cloud that slowly rises and a lighting bolt shoots straight down from the cloud.
Solar Blaze
Splits apart and launches firebombs (left and right) after a set period of time. Effective when you are pinned between two enemies.
Chill Spike
Launch a freezing liquid which flies in a parabolic trajectory. An enemy hit by the freezing liquid will freeze and become unable to move.
Rebound Striker
You can throw a rubber super ball straight and diagonally up or down. As it gets faster and stronger with each successive bound, you can build up power and hit the target to inflict maximum damage!
Water Shield
A rotating shield of water surrounds Mega Man. Pressing the Attack Button once more deactivates the water shield and hurls high-speed drops of water that spiral outward.
Brand new “Mega Man Challenges” mode is back!
The “Mega Man Challenges” mode from MM9 has been upgraded! The Mega Man Challenges allows you to practice in stages by clearing various challenges and gives novice players a chance to master the basic controls before attempting the main story mode! Whether you are a novice or an expert, you can brush-up on your game and polish it to perfection!
Comparison between Easy Mode and Normal Mode!
Easy Mode is featured for people who gave up on MM9 or have not played an action game for a long time. In addition, this would be a perfect mode for people who aren’t used to traditional Mega Man difficulty and need a little assistance.”–Capcom
I’ve never been a real big fan of Megaman, so I’ll have to do my normal routine and check for reviews.

Nintendo Re-Trademarks Eternal Darkness
Apparently a few months ago Nintendo allowed the trademark for Eternal Darkness to expire. But now, according to Siliconera, Nintendo has just recently re-trademarked the title. There’s no information to go on as of yet, but it’s possible that they could have something in mind. There’s the possibility of them creating a New Play Control! version of the game, however due to the way the game is played it seems unlikely. That leaves two options. Either they’re just protecting the name or there’s a sequel brewing. Hopefully it’s the latter. Keep an eye out in the coming months as gaming news starts to pour in from various media conferences.

Genesis: Sonic & Knuckles, 800 Nintendo Points
The fourth installment of the classic Genesis series has finally arrived. Play as Sonic or Knuckles and try to defeat Dr. Robotnik before he can relaunch the mighty Death Egg and take over the world. If you have Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in your WiiWare library, you can combine these two titles to play through Sonic 2 as Knuckles; if you have Sonic the Hedgehog 3, combine these two games and play through the entire epic 14-zone adventure as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles.
It’s about time we got Sonic & Knuckles. Though if it took all that time to get Lock-On working properly, I’m glad they waited. Also, more Phoenix Wright is delicious; gets us ready for Miles Edgeworth tomorrow.

^The numbers on the right represent units sold.
As expected, numbers dropped all around, but apparently the drop was larger than some were expecting. There were numerous reports of a Wii system shortage which may have exacerbated the problem, while some people say it’s the end of days as they always do. Nintendo’s new big three sellers continue to top the list, as well as Mario Kart Wii and the heavily-advertised Just Dance from Ubisoft. Curiously absent from the top 10 is the much-hyped Sega action game Bayonetta; that one caught many people off guard.

Monster Rancher DS Confirmed To Utilize All DS Features
For those of you waiting anxiously for news on Monster Rancher DS, rejoice! The producer for the game (Koichi Yagamuchi) recently said in an interview that the game will utilize all that the DS has to offer. If you are unaware of what the DS has to offer, this includes Wi-Fi features on the game, stylus monster-creation, and using the built-in mic!
When talking about the monster-creation mode, Yagamuchi said “An advanced algorithm is used to recognize the drawn figures. As a result, a different monster is born depending on the size, shape and location of the drawing.” As we get more and more news about this part of the game, it only can get more interesting on how it will turn out. When asked how the Magical Words feature works (and if he had to alter it to recognize english) he said “It was not that difficult to develop the magic word system, because there is a standard voice recognition program for the DS. However, the dictionary file had to be devised different from the usual way to correspond to all of the possible words that can be spoken. Of course, we also had to tune the system to support English.” Also during the interview, he confirms that the North American release of Monster Rancher DS will not have the “kanji” system that Monster Farm 2 DS in Japan does. Yagamuchi said that “However, there is an English word entry system instead, where certain words will create powerful monsters.”
There will also be a Wi-Fi service for the game, which will let you “create monsters based on your Wi-Fi access point information.”
For those looking for a release date, start looking for Monster Rancher DS in March 2010!
I’ve never played any of the Monster Rancher games, but I’m hoping this will be a good introduction to the series for a new player like me.
