Having only played the original Donkey Kong Country series on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System a handful of times, I found it difficult to get as excited a few of my fellow colleagues about the new game.

Upon grasping the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, my adventure began with Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong would later join. Using the Nunchuk, you move DK left and right while using A on the Wii Remote to jump. Special moves can be achieved with holding a direction and moving the Wii Remote in the proper direction. I have a hard time remembering the moves all exactly and in all honesty, they took me awhile to master, even towards the end of the demo. Mostly it was difficult remembering what did what when at a crucial point. When Diddy Kong joined the action, it seemed a bit more forgiving since I had essentially a rocket pack of sorts strapped to my back.
My control issues aside, the game felt updated from previous versions. The graphics were crisp and the sounds felt similar to what they had been. When rolling or ground pounding, it felt fluid and did as necessary.
One serious gripe I have about the game would be the movement speed. Perhaps it’s just my memory issues kicking in here, but it seems slower than previous games. When blasting out of barrels, it wasn’t quite as speedy as I remember.
I’m not sure I come out of this with a completely positive outlook at the moment with the controls being somewhat cumbersome for me, though perhaps others won’t have that issue. What the real sticking point though is the speed. If that gets addressed, then I’m sure this would be a solid DK game.
Nice! I always liked the DK Country games!
