In a recent interview the creator of Metroid and the leader of Team Ninja discuss their latest title, Metroid: Other M.
In a recent interview with 1UP.com, Hayashi and Sakamoto talk about Metroid: Other M, revealing a new game mode and why they changed the perspective of the gameplay. Apparently the creators of Metroid: Other M have put more effort into the storyline this time around. You can tell this with the announcement of the new “theater mode” for the game, which lets the players view all of the cut scenes as a movie, and a 2 hour movie at that. There will be chapters of the film to make it easier to jump around, like a DVD. Yoshio Sakamoto (creator of the Metroid franchise) said “There’s a ‘theater mode’ that lets you view all of the cutscenes linked together seamlessly as a single movie. We placed just as much weight on enjoying the story as we did on the action aspects of this game, but it’s hard to fully communicate a storyline in a video game with just one playthrough. At the same time, though, it’s asking a lot of players to beat the game twice to get it all, so that’s where the idea for that mode came from. It lets you make a lot of discoveries, things you missed or dialogue that makes more sense in retrospect. I hope it helps people understand the story better.” The movie does not only feature cutscenes, but also gameplay footage, which I’m assuming will be used to show different shots, although it seems weird that they wouldn’t just put that into a cutscene that was only shown in the movie. In the interview, Sakamoto also explained why they added third person shooter aspects to the game, saying “I think it provides the sort of gameplay that’s only possible with the Wii remote. If you come across something that seems suspicious, that’s your cue to try switching perspectives.” Hayashi also said that gamers will only find “about 30%” on their first playthrough, thus leaving more challenge for the hardcord gamers who strive for completion. It also appears that they have worked on thecutscenes flowing with the rest of the game, to not make it blatantly obvious that the game has switched between them. The entire interview can be read here.
So what do you gamers think about this new “theater mode”? Are you excited to grab a bucket of popcorn and watch the whole storyline as a movie?
I don’t know about you, but I’m tempted to check this out. If executed correctly, this will be entertaining.
