PAX Prime 2010 Warren Spector Keynote & New Epic Mickey Video

Although liveblogging wasn’t possible for me due to no signal, you can still check out the summary of what happened inside along with new Epic Mickey footage.

10:35AM – Nearly full to capacity, though there still looks to be tons of space remaining.

10:39AM – They’re putting folks up on the top level, a level above where I’m currently located which seems to be the 2nd floor balcony.

10:41AM – I see tons of folks down below playing on their DSs.  A few 1UP mushroom shirts.

10:43AM – I see Robert Khoo walking down the aisle dressed in a suit and looking around.

10:44am – The enforcers on the stage have left and the lights are diming.

10:45AM – Warren Spector come out to Mickey Mouse music and tells everyone that’s enough (of the music).
Gaming is an artform, huge applause to that.

10:48AM – As gamers can’t settle for Deux Ex 47 or 48.

10:50AM – Played Chess/Monopoly since there were no videogames.  Regret floods his speech as he talks about his childhood.

10:51AM – Is totally about nerdom, comic books and such.  Sounds like my father.

10:53AM – Wow, the nerdy pictures keep coming, one of lacrosse and one of him with messy hair and a fork.  The content really dates him, Three Stooges, Beatles.

10:55AM – Star Wars intro rolls and the crowd cheers.  Spector keeps showing off his Disney cred in photos.

10:59AM – With the Atari he was an adult and realized he wasn’t’ alone anymore and was involved with something that didn’t seem strange (gaming).

11:01AM – Spector enjoys creative freedom, talks about it while describing his D&D days.

11:05AM – Steve Jackson Games is where he started out and found his wife.  Left there and went to TSR.  Applied to be an Imagineer.  Also went to Origin Systems Inc.

11:17AM – Spector worries that outside of our “gaming shell” that we are somewhat ashamed.  Talks about how casuals are perceived as the enemy and the double standard of wanting to be accepted.  “We Won” with the whole battle of trying to get casuals to accept us.

11:20AM – Talks about Deux Ex Invisible war. and the flack he caught for it.

11:24AM – Talks about November 2nd and the court case about not selling violent games to children.  Spector argues this has implications of 1st Amendment rights to video games as an expression.

11:27AM – Stresses that game developers need to start changing their thinking for the market changes.  Says gamers need to demand more from your experience and instead of just another sequel, more new innovations.  Also allow developers to do more with their imagination too and not just be a FPS type of things.

11:30AM – Publishers – trust your creators.

11:31AM – All of us: get over our inferiority complex.  Not all games are important however.  We’re in a golden age of gaming.  Something for everyone.  We are the medium of the 21st Century.
