Nintendo’s microphone may soon be seeing the axe.
Nintendo first introduced the Wii Speak peripheral at E3 2008 and went on sale later that year on November. It was the first device to allow Wii owners to speak with a roomful of people across the internet. It was first notably used with Animal Crossing: Wild World and began to expand from there. However, many current titles are not supporting the room-capturing microphone, but instead are opting for a more private headset. This change could mean the end of the fabled Wii Speak.
The Wii Speak has even begun to be taken off the shelves at retailers such as Amazon and Gamestop. Some stores still have a few new ones, but they will soon be unavailable and will only sell used ones. Nintendo was interviewed by IGN on the subject matter and asked if they were still being manufactured.
“The Wii Speak Microphones is still available at limited retail locations,” a Nintendo representative told IGN. “Additional shipments can be made if consumer demand increases.”
This change means that now Wii owners will probably have to purchase the Headbanger Headset for their online chat.
Who here is disappointed in this? I never owned a Wii Speak because I like my privacy nor had any compatible games, so this is really nice change. Also I hope it works as a standard USB mic for PC’s. I could really use one if I could. Also speaking in Rock Band 3 would be nice.
