No Donkey Kong Country Returns Sequel Planned… Yet

Made in the spirit of New Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country Returns was critically successful. Not much of a surprise there, considering Retro Studios’ track record (the Metroid Prime series). What is a bit surprising, to me at least, is that Nintendo isn’t rushing a sequel just yet.

“I wouldn’t say we won’t do a sequel,” said Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe in an interview with Game Informer. “But we don’t have anything planned at this time.”

In the same post, Game Informer mentions Retro admitted they didn’t think making a platformer involved as much work as it did. Maybe that also has something to do with it, aside from The Big N not having any “plans” yet.

Either way, Tanabe’s by-the-book quote makes me think a sequel will be on its way, just not any time soon. I hope if there are any plans for a sequel, Nintendo keeps Retro out of it and lets that studio continue creating what God put them on this Earth to do: make more Metroid games.
