The Nintendo 3DS launched today in America, and zillions of us gamers trekked over to our local game retailers to purchase one for $250 (I picked mine up just about two hours ago, actually ^_^.) And if UBM TechInsights, a global technology consulting firm, is correct in its assessment, it means Nintendo is making about a $150 off each unit sold (sort of).
UBM took apart the 3DS and concluded the device’s components cost approximately $101, according to an estimate they handed to Eurogamer. Of course, this doesn’t in any way mean The Big N is “profiting” $150 off each unit sold. First, retailers get a small cut of that. There are also costs Nintendo has to recover (production costs, marketing, research, etc.). So I wouldn’t jump the gun and say the company is ripping its customers off.
What do you think? Is $250 still too much for a device that supposedly costs about $100 to make? Let us know below! Now if you’ll excuse me, Chun Li’s 3D thighs are smacking me up right now.
