Mario and Sonic Returning for 2012 Olympics

Gaming mascots Mario and Sonic are apparently in training for another Olympics, as Nintendo and Sega recently announced the development of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which is being developed for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS. In addition to classic Olympic events like athletics and aquatics, equestrian sports and soccer will be playable in this newest Mario & Sonic title. This will also be the first game in the series to be released on the Nintendo 3DS, and will include more than 50 playable events, for one or more players.

“Mario and Sonic have had a phenomenally successful partnership and we are extremely proud to be able to recreate this once again with Nintendo and [International Sports Media] for the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said Naoya Tsurumi, the Chairman for SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “It is truly exciting to be in the position to develop interactive entertainment software titles based on the Olympic Games, and for Sonic and Mario to once again be a part of this historic event.”

Nintendo plans to announce a launch date later this year.

I’ve never played a Mario & Sonic title myself, but I’m glad the series is doing so well; it seems like a very successful formula. I still can’t help but laugh at the thought of Mario trying to outrun Sonic, though.
