Nintendo has posted more information about the mechanics and story of the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which releases next month. Some of the following paragraphs will contain spoilers; they will be marked as such, and grouped together at the bottom of the article. The original press release, which contains these spoilers as well, can be found here.
Like in Twilight Princess, Link will have the ability to swim freely underwater, though presumably there will be oxygen restrictions. Players can tilt the Wii Remote Plus in order to guide Link in the direction he needs to go. Players can also use the Wii Remote Plus to wield one of Link’s new items, the Whip, which can be used to attack enemies and grab out-of-reach items.
Potions make a return in this game, but in a much more intricate way than before. Throughout the adventure, players will come across a number of different insects, which they can collect and bring back to Skyloft. Combining insects with the available potions at the bazaar will give potions powerful and useful new effects, on top of the original ones. Players can mix and match in order to get the best potion for the occasion.
The paragraphs below contain spoilers for the game’s story.
In the Faron Woods area of the game, Link will eventually come across an area that was left undiscovered in Twilight Princess, namely Lake Floria. This lake is home to the water-dwelling Parella tribe, who have a squid-like appearance. Back home in Skyloft, however, players can venture over to Fun Fun Island, where “there’s a lot of fun to be had.” In order to access this fun, however, players must help out the inhabitant of Fun Fun Island.
The potions tidbit sounds really cool; I’m glad they’re making the game’s mechanics more intricate, as things like this add a lot of depth.
