At CES, Nyko’s focus was mainly on Sony’s soon to be released new handheld, PlayStation Vita. Even with the focus being non-Nintendo, I found a few accessories that were worth a few moments of note.
Power Grip (3DS)
Although this is already available, it’s worth mentioning that the Nyko Power Grip for 3DS, unlike their last battery pack, doesn’t require you to replace the battery. Instead, the unit straps onto the bottom of your Nintendo 3DS and provides a longer battery life. When it’s picked up, I noticed that the grip was hard to get used to. In my hands, the firm surface wasn’t too pleasant to hold. It was somewhat difficult for me to find a position I particularly enjoyed. Those with smaller hands may find the same troubles I had with comfort.
To remove it, you simply disconnect it from the power plug and gingerly work it off. My first time trying to get it off met with little success, but once I examined how it was seated, it worked perfectly.
Being the same price as the Power Pak, I could see this as an alternative for those who don’t want to open their battery case. At the same time though, the comfort, for me, was a big issue and I wonder how it would fare in a long gaming session.

Yo Gabba Gabba! Hip Pack – Brobee
Before visiting the Nyko booth, I had never heard of Yo Gabba Gabba! The TV show by Nickelodeon Productions is apparently quite popular. Hoping to cash in on the success of the show, Nyko has designed a prototype Brobee Hip Pack so that fans of the show can carry their system and other items with a fun themed pouch.
The pouch on the front features Brobee with a removable mouth, so users can turn frowns upside down. I’m concerned though that this piece might be easily lost due to the weakness of the velcro. There is storage for the mouth with strong velcro in the main pouch. Inside the main zippered compartment is another zippered compartment with room for accessories or even games. With the main compartment itself, there’s enough room to place a Nintendo DS or even a Nintendo 3DS. Included is a themed cleaning cloth to clean whatever handheld electronic is stored inside.
As this is was a prototype, the Nyko representative was quick to point out that this was not the final design. Still, even if they don’t keep a few options here and there, the adorable fun face and ample storage might make this a decent pick up for the younger crowd.
