Nintendo Download: 10/4/12

Nintendo is stepping up their eShop presence, in preparation for a busy holiday season. In addition to the eight games listed below, new level packs are available for New Super Mario Bros. 2, for use in Coin Rush mode. A playable demo is also available for Style Savvy: Trendsetters.

Future weeks will see a number of new downloadable games from talented designers like Level-5 and Suda 51, original Nintendo downloadables like a Pushmo sequel, a series of downloadable NES and Game Boy titles on the Virtual Console such as Ninja Gaiden, and older retail titles being made available for download such as Super Mario 3D Land.

Nintendo 3DS: Crosswords Plus, $29.99

This full retail title comes packed with over 1,000 crossword puzzles to be solved across various difficulty levels. Use the stylus to write letters in the blanks, or ask for hints if you get stuck; you’ll be rated at the end of the puzzle depending on how well you do. In addition to standard puzzles, players can try out Giant Crosswords, as well as word search and anagram puzzles. A Word of the Day features, as well as vocabulary-building mini-games, are also included. Players can receive new puzzles from SpotPass/StreetPass regularly.

Nintendo 3DS: Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, $29.99

This game provides you with a personal art tutor, Vince, to guide you through 30 art lessons with examples. Learn how to use real art tools like pencils and paintbrushes, imitating their use with the Nintendo 3DS stylus. Users will learn about techniques for sketching, shading, color mixing and more. Paint your own creations in Free Paint mode, take photographs with the Nintendo 3DS Camera and paint over them, create your own lessons, and share them all with SpotPass.

Game Boy: Dr. Mario, $3.99

Experience the Game Boy version of the classic puzzle game. Toss colored capsules into a bottle, matching up four of the same color to make them disappear. Use these capsules to destroy the multi-colored viruses that live in the bottle.

eShop: Pokémon Dream Radar, $2.99

Use the AR functionality of the Nintendo 3DS to locate and capture Pokémon in the real world. Among the Pokémon available for capture are the previously-unseen Therian Formes of  Tornadus, Thundurus and Landorus. Captured Pokémon can be transferred into Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2.

eShop: Cave Story, $9.99

Cave Story has seen several releases on Nintendo systems already, but now it appears as an exclusive eShop downloadable. Take control of a young amnesiac boy, blasting your way through a labyrinthine floating island in order to save a race of rabbit people known as the Mimiga.

eShop: Samurai G, $1.99

You are the samurai Tetsuo, on a quest to collect as much of the Tengu’s gold as you can before it is taken by the villainous Warlord Fuma. Defeat assassins, avoid traps, and activate Golden Mode in order to defeat your enemies and save the day.

DSiWare: Academy: Chess Puzzles, $1.99/200 Nintendo Points

Chess novices and veterans alike can enjoy the chess puzzles available in this package. Solve 750 different puzzles, grouped into three different difficulty levels, while listening to a jazz soundtrack.

WiiWare: Drop Zone: Under Fire, 500 Nintendo Points

In the year 2070, Earth has been taken over by alien robots; you are part of the Return To Earth Defense Force’s drop team, tasked with delivering important supplies to the humans. Fall through over 100 levels, spinning around 360 degrees and shooting at any robots that try to stop you. Switch out weapons and collect bonuses as you fall, for optimal alien destroying.

I’m glad to see that eShop releases are stepping up, and I hope the Wii U eShop is this strong out of the gate. I feel like some of the upcoming games could have served well as titles to tide us over between retail releases.
