Having not played the original Battalion Wars, I didn’t know exactly what to expect going in; I knew it was a strategy game, but that brought to my mind games like Warcraft and Command & Conquer, which I liked to play when I was younger. The game didn’t live up to that particular expectation of mine, but it did manage to keep me glued to my TV for a good long time before it was beaten. Battalion Wars II (hereinafter BWii) is one of the more entertaining games currently available for the system, or at least it’s one of the games getting the most playtime for me.

The story is, in reality, pretty simple as far as twists and turns go, though it’s hard for me to talk about it without giving anything away. Basically, the game starts out with the Anglo Isles attacking the Solar Empire over rumors that they are constructing some sort of superweapon, and the world war starts to escalate from there. It ends up being somewhat predictable, but that doesn’t make it any worse, really. It’s nothing that’ll captivate you, but like Super Mario Galaxy, the story fulfills its purpose of being a vehicle for the gameplay.

Our Rating for Review: Battalion Wars II
8.6
Single Player
Entertaining strategy gameplay, as well as a very appropriate difficulty curve, though the ally AI will have you scratching your head.
8.0
Multiplayer
No local multiplayer, but online goes off without a hitch. Play against friends or strangers in three equally fun gaming modes.
8.0
Controls
The control scheme works quite effectively for the most part, but unfortunately it’s less than intuitive and will take a bit of time to master.
8.7
Graphics
The whole game looks very smooth even at 480p, with satisfactory art direction and a fair amount of different terrain to battle on.
6.4
Sound
The music, though not standing out, is enjoyable, while the voice acting is laugh-out-loud bad.
7.0
Replay Value
While the single-player doesn’t give you a lot of reason to go back, the multiplayer certainly does.
8.2
Overall
A genre not well explored on Wii, so pick this up for a fresh and fun gaming experience.
