12. Conker and Berri (Conker’s Bad Fur Day)
Conker isn’t exactly the model boyfriend: he stays out late, drinks way too much, and isn’t shy about public urination. However, there is some merit in his quest to get home, as all he really wants is to see his beloved Berri. Things get a bit complicated after she’s kidnapped, but no caveman, zombie, Mafia weasel, or Nazi teddy bear is going to keep Conker from finding her. The surprisingly tragic ending to his adventure ends the relationship a bit prematurely, but not before a joyous reunion and Matrix parody.

11. Samus Aran and Adam Malkovich (Metroid Fusion)
Adam was Samus’ commanding officer on an unspecified mission taking place before the events of Fusion. At some point during this assignment, he died to save her life. So you can imagine Samus’ surprise when Adam’s digitized mind resurfaces as the computer she takes orders from in her battle against the X Parasites. Proving that history repeats itself, Adam helps his “Lady” put a stop to both the X and the Federation’s Metroid hatching program by sacrificing himself once more and crashing the entire space station into nearby SR388. Although it is unclear whether Samus and Adam ever had a deeper relationship than CO and bounty hunter, one thing is for sure: Fusion offers us a surprisingly personal (and controversial) glimpse into Samus’ life.

10. James and Mary Sunderland (Silent Hill 2)
Nothing says “undying love” like an invitation to a quaint resort town from your beautiful wife. There are only two problems: your wife has been dead for a few years, and that town is Silent Hill. James and Mary’s story is as bittersweet as it is captivating, as James struggles with the grief and guilt that has been consuming him since the death of his beloved. It all culminates in a tender reunion… only Mary is a horrible monster consisting of barbed wire and a hospital bed. Touching, isn’t it?
