The game feels like it’s running a modified version of the Tony Hawk’s American Sk8land engine, which it probably is. You have a similar 3D perspective, and as you’re flying through the air or riding a kayak (a KAYAK!), you’ll want to do tricks to build up your score. The major way to earn points is with bone multipliers; as you’re flying through the air, you can hit a pose to build up your Bone Break meter, and if that fills up, you’ll break all 206 bones in your body when you hit the ground, and your score multiples by 10.
The game falls flat in this respect, as well. Performing the stunt, and doing tricks during it, will net you a few thousand points, which would normally seem respectable. If you look at the high scores for stunts, though, it’s not at all rare to find them in the tens of millions. Millions! What this means is that, whenever you’re given a stunt to perform, you’re encouraged to run around town and do random stuff in one giant combo, and then end with the stunt in question. This is pretty bad game design. Additionally, the prospect of breaking all your bones sounds cool in theory, especially when you consider this game showcases ragdoll physics, but when your character just stands right up afterward, you’ll be disappointed, to say the least.
Putting all the bad game design aside, this group couldn’t even get the basic game engine running properly. Your character’s turning is highly clunky, and your jump is some sort of laughable superjump which makes no sense. When riding a vehicle, your normal turn is like trying to turn an ocean liner, and the speedier turn offered by shoulder buttons isn’t a great help. Graphics are bland. Collision detection is bad too, and even knowing this (at least I hope they did), they decided to put several small collectibles up in the air for you to collect during a launch; as if you could manage to control your launch so you can hit a rather small target precisely isn’t hard enough, you may not get it just because the engine hates you. I literally had to toss the game when I found that the terrible design was preventing me from beating the third level anytime this century.
