Yesterday, the American Council on Exercise, or ACE, released information contained in their full study of Wii Sports that shows players can burn calories by playing the game. Although not effective as the real activity, the games contained in Wii Sports had a variety of results when it came to thirty minute sessions of each.
If you’re looking for maximum burn, you might want to try Wii boxing which was at the top of the list with 216 calories burnt in 30 minutes. Tennis, baseball, bowling, and golf came in at 159, 135, 117, and 93 for the same period of time.
These tests were conducted on a variety of men and woman ages 20-29. Currently ACE is sponsoring a study which will take a look at what Wii Fit is doing for fitness.
A PDF containing the full information of the study can be found here.
I’m fairly certain that in order to get these results, you’d have to be standing up and active during game play. I do because I enjoy it, but I wonder how many out there are thinking they are working out by sitting on their duffs waving the Wii Remote around in the air. I’m very interested in what their Wii Fit study results will be like as well.
